Due to the economic boom of the late 1990s, job seekers have a multitude of options. We face a job market that offers many people extremely lucrative and rewarding careers. In light of this private sector boom and the devolution of the public sector, it is a wonder that a significant number of job seekers continue to gravitate toward the nonprofit sector.

The nonprofit sector, in fact, is extremely vibrant and growing. In the Bay Area in particular, the nonprofit sector has always been unique in its breadth and innovation. Devoted, public-minded individuals have long flocked to the Bay Area's nonprofits, even as funding levels have decreased and job openings have become more limited.

This handbook is for those who are seeking employment in the nonprofit sector, both those who are just beginning to work in the field, or considering it, and those who are looking for a new position. It is for those who have grown up in the Bay Area's unique communities, and for those who have recently arrived. Overall, it is for people who are interested in finding work that gives you a sense of purpose and is both professionally and personally rewarding - even if it is a challenge to find.

This handbook was created by a handful of current and former Bay Area nonprofit job seekers with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We know people like us are less likely to find jobs through campus recruiting, "head hunters," big internet job sites, and traditional career paths. Thus we have provided concrete resources - such as where to find job announcements, what publications to read, or where to "temp" while you're looking - in addition to observations about the less tangible aspects of the Bay Area's nonprofit landscape.

Through this handbook, we hope nonprofit job seekers in the Bay Area will feel they are not alone in the job search and will see that there are, in fact, both support and resources for people who make the conscious decision to devote their professional lives to improving our community through work in the nonprofit sector. Best of luck with your search!
