Computer Recycling

www.sfrecycles.org

If the computers are from a small business/non-profit and there aren't
too many of them you can recycle them for free by dropping them off at
one of six computer retail stores throughout the city. Our website,
www.sfrecycles.org   lists the addresses and stores under the "What do I
do with my...?" section. That section also lists computer recyclers
for larger businesses.

Your best bet for older equipment is to call HMR at (415) 647-6071.
HMR is located at 435 23rd Street, off of 3rd. They recycle all types
of electronic equipment, specializing in computers.

ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY PROJECT
Begun in 1991 as the BMUG Computer Refurbishing Project, Access 2 Technology was a response to community inquiries about what could be done with old computers. Computers were initially refurbished by Berkely Mac User Group members and redistributed to low income and elderly community individuals. The service later moved to San Leandro, where it shared space with the Alameda County Computer Resource Center. In 1997, the effort was renamed Access 2 Technology. The facility has since relocated to Oakland.

Computer equipment is donated by individuals, businesses, corporations, government agencies, manufacturers and recycling centers. Incoming donations are sorted, tested, repaired, cleaned and assembled into a standardized computer system package which includes all necessary components and appropriate software for the targeted end user. Access 2 Technology provides technology education as well as machines through agencies like the Eastmont Computing Center. The computer refurbishment process is supervised by staff, mentors, interns and volunteers. They redistribute over 300 computers and parts per month to the schools, community-based organizations and individuals with special needs who would otherwise be without access to personal computers.

Hi,

I read this article a little while back about IBM working to help charities
and non-profits recycle computer hardware. It looked like a good program,
but I don't know if it ever got off the ground. Anyone who tries to go this
route, please let me know what your results are.

Best,
