We’re looking for a Digital Communications Associate to join our diverse and growing team at Common Cause North Carolina.

Working with our Director of Communications, our HBCU program team, and our Organizing and Campaigns teams, our Digital Communications Associate will help highlight and grow our innovative work at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in North Carolina, while also supporting our work to inspire and engage more young voters and activists in our state.

The position will use a wide variety of digital communications tools – social media, videos, email, texting, graphic design, and more – to produce content and tell the story of Common Cause North Carolina and our members, to engage young voters, and to help us build an inclusive, multiracial democracy.

This role reports to the Director of Communications for Common Cause North Carolina, and is located in North Carolina (with a preference for someone in the Triangle or Triad areas). We hope our new Digital Communications Associate will join us in June!

Responsibilities
Use social media to drive engagement with our HBCU work
· Manage social media platforms for our HBCU program, including TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook and other emerging platforms, frequently posting content to highlight our work at HBCU campuses
· Help maintain the webpage for our HBCU Student Action Alliance with content that highlights the work of the program
· Produce video content to highlight our HBCU program and related issues
· Design digital flyers and graphics to promote campus events related to our HBCU program
·  Work with our Democracy Fellows at HBCU campuses and Common Cause North Carolina staff to support them to create content for our digital platforms
· Support Democracy Fellows in writing and editing op-eds and blog posts
· Visit each of our HBCU campuses 1-2 times per semester to capture video and photos, especially for our on-campus events

Support our work to expand our reach to a more diverse and engaged membership
· Design and produce digital content to expand our reach with North Carolinians, with a special focus on people between the ages of 18-35, including content that educates about elections and democracy issues and motivates them to vote and to take action on important policy issues
· Produce digital content that elevates our brand among North Carolinians, especially those between the ages of 18-35
· Develop, implement and evaluate strategies to further grow and diversify our membership via digital engagement
· Support the management of social media and other digital platforms for Common Cause North Carolina

Support with creating additional external media materials
· Support in drafting press releases, organizing press conferences, and helping with other press outreach
· Support in creating fundraising materials to highlight the important work of Common Cause North Carolina
· Support in creating our nonpartisan voter guides and voter education materials, including outreach to candidates

You will thrive in this role if you have:
A strong commitment to Common Cause’s nonpartisan mission, and a passion for advancing racial equity and social justice through our democracy agenda
Ability to build rapport, trust and credibility quickly with diverse communities and stakeholders, especially with college students and young adults
A track record of working collaboratively with others
Strong and compelling writing and public speaking skills, with the ability to distill complex concepts for a general audience (and in particular, a young audience) and comfort being on camera
Critical thinking skills, and a resourceful approach to problem-solving
Strong organization skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and comfort with multiple and shifting priorities
Deep familiarity with office productivity tools (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Slack, Zoom), and a demonstrated ability to learn new tools on own
Openness to feedback, and awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth

The following is required:
Experience creating and/or executing communication plans
Experience managing social media accounts for organizations or leaders, including growing and diversifying followers, and increasing engagement from followers on social media
Ability to travel within state (especially to HBCU campuses) 1-2 times per month on average, and ability to travel nationally 1-2 times per year for team and/or all staff retreats
Per our non-partisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party

We have a preference for candidates who also demonstrate:
Experience managing email campaigns, especially to thousands of recipients
Experience using design platforms (such as Canva) and website management (such as WordPress)
Familiarity with North Carolina’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, especially opportunities for engagement
Familiarity with North Carolina politics and democracy issues (voting rights, redistricting, money in politics, ethics, etc.)

Additional information about this role:
This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining negotiations.

Common Cause is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time; please note that if hired, you will be asked to produce documentation for authorization to work in the US.

$60,000 – $70,000 a year
